Difference Between Pipe and Tubes
Pipes
- Dimension Measurement: Based on nominal pipe size (NPS), focusing on internal diameter for smaller sizes and outside diameter for larger sizes.
- Material and Use: Typically softer materials, designed for transporting fluids and gases under pressure.
- Manufacturing: Aimed at handling volume and pressure, with less emphasis on dimensional precision.
Tubes
- Dimension Measurement: Measured by exact outside diameter and wall thickness, can be various shapes.
- Material and Use: Made from a wider range of materials and alloys, used in structural applications and precision industries.
- Manufacturing: Requires more precise processes, with greater emphasis on dimensional accuracy and rigidity.
Summary
Pipes are primarily used for fluid and gas transport, sized by nominal dimensions and built to handle pressure. Tubes, on the other hand, are used in structural and precision applications, requiring exact measurements and higher material strength.

The price of stainless steel pipes is significantly influenced by various production factors. The grade and source of raw materials are pivotal, with higher-grade materials typically leading to increased costs due to their enhanced properties. The pickling process, essential for removing impurities and improving corrosion resistance, also contributes to the cost, particularly when extended or more intensive treatments are employed. Additionally, the frequency of cold drawing, which is crucial for achieving precise dimensional accuracy and mechanical strength, increases labor and production time, thereby raising expenses. Finally, the level of surface finishing, including detailed polishing and the application of protective coatings, plays a significant role in determining the final price, as more sophisticated finishing techniques usually result in higher manufacturing costs.
Austenitic stainless steels, like grades 304 and 316, are generally non-magnetic because they contain high levels of nickel and have a face-centered cubic crystal structure. However, some stainless steel types, like ferritic and martensitic grades (e.g., 430 and 410), are magnetic.
Clean the Pipe: Start by thoroughly cleaning the pipe's surface with a soft cloth or brush and an appropriate cleaner, such as soapy water or a specialized stainless steel cleaner, to remove all dirt, grease, and impurities.
Use Abrasives: For surface rust, lightly sand the rusted area with fine-grit sandpaper or a scouring paste. Ensure to sand in the direction of the metal grain to avoid additional scratches.
Chemical Rust Removal: For stubborn rust, consider using a chemical rust remover. Be sure to read the product instructions and take necessary safety precautions, such as wearing gloves and protective eyewear.
Clean and Neutralize: After using a rust remover, thoroughly rinse the surface with water, and then neutralize any remaining acidic substances with an alkaline solution, like a mixture of baking soda and water.
Plywood Case Packaging: Stainless steel seamless pipes are securely encased in durable plywood cases, ideal for safeguarding against damages during long-haul transportation. Plywood cases provide robust protection from mechanical impacts and environmental elements.
Woven Bag Packaging: For lighter or thinner stainless steel pipes, woven bag packaging offers a practical and economical solution. These bags are flexible yet sturdy, effectively protecting the pipes during handling and transit while keeping the packaging costs minimal.
For coastal areas or marine applications where saltwater corrosion is a concern, we recommend Grade 316 stainless steel, which includes molybdenum to enhance corrosion resistance. In industrial settings with exposure to chemicals, Grade 317, with even higher molybdenum content, might be more appropriate as it offers greater resistance to chemical corrosion. For less aggressive environments or general applications, Grade 304 stainless steel is usually sufficient, providing good corrosion resistance against a wide range of chemicals. Additionally, for extremely harsh conditions, like high-salinity or acidic environments, super austenitic grades like AL-6XN or duplex stainless steels might be the best options due to their superior corrosion-resistant properties."
