Austenitic, Duplex, Martensitic, and Ferritic Stainless Steels: A Comparative Overview

Austenitic Stainless Steel

  • Composition: High chromium and nickel content.
  • Properties: Non-magnetic, excellent corrosion resistance, very ductile, and good for welding.
  • Applications: Common in kitchenware, chemical processing equipment, and architectural applications.

Duplex Stainless Steel

  • Composition: Contains both austenitic and ferritic structures in equal parts.
  • Properties: Stronger than both austenitic and ferritic steels, excellent resistance to corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.
  • Applications: Widely used in chemical processing, marine environments, and oil and gas industries.

Martensitic Stainless Steel

  • Composition: High carbon and moderate chromium content.
  • Properties: Magnetic, can be hardened by heat treatment, moderate corrosion resistance.
  • Applications: Ideal for cutlery, surgical instruments, and some industrial applications.

Ferritic Stainless Steel

  • Composition: High chromium, low carbon content.
  • Properties: Magnetic, good corrosion and oxidation resistance, not hardenable by heat treatment.
  • Applications: Used in automotive parts, industrial equipment, and interior architecture.
